Today I decided to finally mount a few of the RAM ball mounts on the inner fairing. This is an idea I had pretty much the day I bought the 'Glide but took my time investigating and pondering before actually doing it. I had a little bit of free time today; just enough to squeeze in a quick 1/2-hour project.
My idea was to pull the outer fairing off (something I'd done already just to see how it mounted), then drill holes in the inner fairing and screw in the RAM ball mounts from inside the inner fairing. I went and got some 3/4" 10x24 stainless steel phillips head screws and stainless washers to use for this. I also used some aluminum bushing/spacers I had in the garage to bolster the inner fairing's plastic inside and out.
To remove the outer fairing, you must remove 7 screws; 3 at the windshield and 4 on the inner-fairing side. Two of the inner-fairing screws are located just under the mirrors, the remaining two are located at the lower edge of the fairing near the fork tubes. You must turn the bars to the full left and full right to properly reach these two bottom screws.
The screws are T-25 Torx.

rammounts0002.jpg - The other two inner-fairing screws are easier to reach; located just under the mirrors.

rammounts0003.jpg - The last screws are the three holding the windshield. The center screw should be removed last while the outer fairing is propped in place with a free hand or a friend helping.

rammounts0004.jpg - Once the outer fairing is removed, disconnect the headlight connector and set the outer fairing aside. From the front of the bike, the wiring, stereo and gauges are readily accessible.

rammounts0005.jpg - Once things were torn down, I located where I wanted to place the RAM ball mounts and drilled pilot holes from the inner fairing.

rammounts0006.jpg - After the pilot holes were drilled, I went around to the cockpit side of the inner fairing and drilled the final-sized holes.

rammounts0007.jpg - Reassemble the outer fairing in the reverse order of disassembly. In this picture I left the windshield off as I plan on pulling it apart before riding the bike again to finish the wiring.
